The Dust Bowl
David C. King

The "Dust Bowl" describes both a time in American history (the mid 1930s) and a region of the country (the Great Plains). As a result of severe weather included blinding dust storms caused by drought, misuse of the land by farmers, and the economic pressures of the Great Depression, farmers and their families in a large area of the Central United States were faced with loss of usable land, lack of work, and extreme poverty. This is their story, told in their own words and in photographs. Selections include newspaper accounts, letters, interviews, memoirs, songs, government documents, FDR's "Second New Deal," and an excerpt from John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath.

World War I : The Great War
A.J. Scopino, Jr.

The war, which many thought would be history's last, began in a region once again in the news near the end of the twentieth century -- Bosnia. Although the United States remained on the sidelines for well over two years, its eventual entry tipped the balance and contributed powerfully to bringing the awful hostilities to their end. This volume offers the reader a selection of primary source documents that relate to preparation for the war, life in the trenches, the treatment of African-Americans at the time, post-war struggles, conflict over the Fourteen Points, and several historians' interpretations of the war.

World War II : On the Homefront
Phyllis Raybin Emert

When World War II broke out, Roosevelt led the nation through a dramatic changeover to a wartime economy. Women found a new place in the work-force; Americans at home pulled together to economize through rationing of food, tires, gasoline, silk, and more; families grew their own produce in their victory gardens; and school children saved their pennies to invest in war bonds. This volume of life on the U. S. homefront tells the stories of the people, in their own words, who lived through those times: the black Americans, struggling against increased prejudice; the women who embarked on career tracks which would change their opportunities to this day; and the Japanese internment camps.
